December 12, 2002 - Air Canada to Discontinue Paper Tickets

Air Canada will discontinue issuing paper tickets for all flights within Canada beginning January 1, 2003, becoming the first full-service international airline to adopt a fully electronic ticketing system on domestic routes.

This move, along with similar moves by other carriers, is a result of recent advances in technology and a desire by all airlines to save on distribution costs.

Airlines have estimated they save between $1 and $8 US per ticket with e-ticketing because they don't have to process and deliver paper. That translates into potential savings of between $8 million and $64 million US per year.

Like many U.S. carriers, Air Canada currently charges $30 for a paper ticket if an electronic ticket is available. Starting in January, consumers will have no choice but to accept an electronic ticket for flights within Canada.
