August 30, 2002 - Midwest Express Strike Update

Strikes by Midwest Express flight attendants threaten to bring serious disruption to the airline after contract talks failed last night. The carrier's 425 attendants say they will stage mass walk-outs or random stoppages. No prior warning of their action will be given.

Last ditch negotiations broke down on Thursday as the two sides reached the end of a 30-day "cooling off" period demanded by federal mediation rules. The attendants are now free to take action.

"It is unfortunate we have not been able to come to an agreement that both parties think is fair," said David C. Reeve, senior vice president of operations at Midwest Express. "However, we will do everything the law allows to ensure our customers are not inconvenienced. We have developed a number of contingency plans and are fully prepared to take the action necessary to deliver safe, uninterrupted service for passengers."
