May 22, 2002 - Increased Security in New York City

Information provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) to New York City authorities has prompted an increase in security measures that will remain in effect through the Memorial Day holiday. Transportation disruptions are likely.

The unsubstantiated, general threat includes references to New York landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. Police have already begun random security checks of vehicles at bridges. For security reasons, officials will not release details of security measures to be implemented; however, precautions that have been taken in the past are:

* Random vehicle checks including trucks, private and commercial cars at all bridge and tunnel routes into the city.

* Increased passenger scrutiny and screening at ferry docks and port facilities, train, metro and bus stations.

* Controlled, screened access to local landmarks, museums and tourist destinations.

Heightened security measures, combined with Memorial Day holiday travel and Fleet Week festivities, May 22-27, are likely to adversely impact transportation and traffic conditions into and throughout the city. Travelers may encounter heavy traffic, blocked roads, detours and delays with all modes of transportation over the holiday period.

Exercise patience and follow all instructions given by police and security personnel.
