May 3, 2002 - Delta Airlines introduces $10 charge for paper tickets

Delta Airlines announced the elimination of issuing paper tickets for all travel itineraries for which e-tickets are available. Customers can convert e-tickets to paper for a $10 fee at reservations centers and airport ticket counters. However, the fee is waived for SkyMiles Medallion members and full fare, unrestricted tickets.

The additional fee does not apply to those paper tickets issued by GTM, however if Delta converts an electronic ticket issued by GTM, the $10 fee will be assessed by the airline.

According to Delta, approximately 75 percent of its customers currently use e-tickets. That is the same percentage as Northwest Airlines with American, United and Continental airlines reporting lower percentages. Delta and American Airlines are the only major carriers (to date) who have announced they will charge for the issuance of paper tickets.
