The CTX-5000 security scanners that airports are employing to comply with new Federal Aviation Administration rules pose a threat to undeveloped photographic and motion picture film in checked baggage. The use of CTX-5000 scanners is increasing within the U.S. and at many international airports as airport officials strive to meet FAA security policies. If carrying film in checked baggage, travelers should place undeveloped film - used or unused - in protective pouches that will withstand high levels of X rays; seek professional guidance when purchasing protective pouches or bags. For carry-on baggage, place the film and loaded cameras in see-through or plastic bags, and request a hand-inspection before placing the bag on the scanning conveyor belt. If possible, do not send undeveloped film through the X ray scanners at carry-on security checkpoints. A risk of film damage exists, even though scanners at carry-on check points operate at lower X ray levels than does the CTX-5000. This applies to any film that has not yet been developed, whether it has been exposed (used) or not. Scanners do not have any effect on film, prints or slides that have already been developed. ©2001 Gateway Travel Management. All Rights Reserved.
